Muscovy Ducks
Native to Mexico, South and Central America, and three counties in the United States, Muscovy ducks in HCMUD 71 are a feral non-native species. Noted for the red skin around the base of their bill and eyes, and varying black, white, and brown plumage, the ducks are often seen frequenting area parks, lakes, and neighborhoods. Muscovy ducks reproduce excessively, laying large numbers of eggs. Adult females may produce three (3) times per year, laying between 8 – 21 eggs each time. Because of this, uncontrolled duck populations can increase dramatically in a short period of time.
High density Muscovy duck populations can contribute to reduced water quality, and cause significant damage to landscape beds, turf grass, plants, and shrubs. HCMUD 71 continues to address the issues created by high density Muscovy duck populations with increased maintenance, including frequent pressure washing, and ongoing trapping and egg control practices on District property.
Although the District takes a proactive approach in managing Muscovy ducks within the District’s parks and common areas, residents routinely report similar issues on their own property. Muscovy ducks on private property or any property outside of the District’s parks and common areas are the responsibility of the property owner.
